The triathlon was scheduled to begin with a 2.4-mile swim in Utah Lake at 6:55 am. At about 6:35 am a front passed through with strong, gusty, 10-15 mph winds from the northwest. By about 7:15 am the swells on the lake had become severe enough that the racers were in trouble and the swim portion of the race was cancelled and the next 2 hours were spent trying to account for all the participants. Unfortunately one participant did drown due to the severe conditions.
